I have to disagree with Dan Nagle's suggestion that carriage
control has been dead since 1960 printers.
(I object to the date, not the finality implied, where he is probably
correct).
It is STILL in the '77 compilers to dates as recent as 1991
and I am STILL using carriage control in many operational
systems, simply because it IS implemented for screen and printer
control and IS portable.
That doesn't mean I like it. I do try to drive HP printers with
our interchangeable and selectable printers drivers and not
with carriage control. However I never used the '&' control,
preferring the trailing '\' control in the format statement.
