I have been informed by a specialist in Windows installations, =0D
that YES, Windows 95 DOES have bugs, some of which were fixed=0D
by downloadable "service packs" from Microsoft. And YES, the =0D
number of FCB's available was one of the problems.=0D
But I am ALSO told, thet unless the Operating System is installed=0D
again and correctly, the service packs will not always help, =0D
and in particular, the limit on the number of open files in DOS=0D
and the non-funcional DOS boot problem (cannot create fcb files)=0D
are NOT resolved!=0D
Versions located are 4.00.1111; 4.00.1998; 4.01.2222 and 4.00.0590.=0D
=0D
I now have a 94k Zip file with a test of the problem, that can be unzipped=
=0D
and run under a DOS boot or in a DOS Window, which tests=0D
whether the installation has a problem for the two cases.=0D
The test tries to create 4 fcb files and open 30 handle files.=0D
If it gets past that, it then tests a lot of (unspecified) DOS=0D
services, like memory aquisition, general file handling=0D
in various modes, etc; running time 10 secs.=0D
Warning: it's just a GO/NOGO, reporting an error number and=0D
subclass if failing at any point. This will only be of interest =0D
to those who use DOS or DOS-in-Windows.=0D
=0D
The fortran execution problems reported are ABOVE this level of=0D
basics. The MS F77 compiler has an INTERNAL 20 open file limit.=0D
