Here's some results about Windows 95. (1:48 am in the morning!)
Thanks to Bob Cohen putting me onto the fact that there are
a LOT of MSDOS .pif configuration files around in Windows 95,
and depending what you have JUST done, affects which .PIF file
will be used next!!!! Hunt for them with Windows Explorer!
There may be different versions with diffeent properties!
These are the ones I found:-
DOSPROMPT Windows
COMMAND Windows
EXIT to DOS Windows Leave as MSDOS mode in properties!!
MSDOS Windows Desk
MSDOS PROMPT Windows Start Menu
MSDOS Windows Microsoft Office
DESKEDIT Norton Utilities Leave?
FOXRUN FOXbase Leave?
WZ Winzip Leave?
I tried to force Windows 95 to take 40 files, by typing into
EACH "alternate" config.sys, under the Program TAB in
"Properties", the line "FILES=40" ; after modifying the visible
single config.sys file with a text editor and cold rebooting had
no effect at all.
This typing is a pain! You can paste with right click.
DON't leave it as "MSDOS" in advanced settings: that reboots every time!
Use "Suggest MSDOS mode as necessary".
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I DID, BUT I CAN NOW CREATE OVER 100 OPEN FILES!
My Config.sys STILL says there are FILES=40, but I see no limit!
My F90 test program, compiled in Elf90 NOW SUDDENLY runs
to at least 100 files in my test!! I only changed the loop
limit from 30 to 100, to see when it would crash (expected 40)
but it just went on...! And this was crashing at 20 before!
I suspect HIDDEN invisible Config.sys files or equivalents!!!
However, the sort is still crashing at 18 files... :o(
And ONLY in Windows 95!!
