Using the directory information is fine as long as it is still correct,
but it easily gets changed. Haven't we all occasionally glanced inside
a data file with a text editor and exited with a "save-and-close"
command instead of a simple "quit"? Events like that update the
directory time-stamp even if the file contents haven't changed. And
what if the file has to be filtered or moved to another operating
system?
