Why does ED4W fail to start, producing a general protection fault?

When ED4W is installed on a Windows98 system where Internet Explorer version 6.0 is also installed, a general protection fault is generated when ED4W is started. There is not a fix for this problem, the only known work around is to uninstall IE6. This problem is not generated when using an older version of Internet Explorer.
